Oneida Nation, NY -- The Oneida Indian Nation is moving its cigarette manufacturing plant from the Buffalo-area to the nation’s homelands in Oneida.
The move will allow the nation to continue to sell nation-manufactured cigarettes at lower prices and free from New York State taxes.
The nation purchased Sovereign Tobacco, its tobacco company, about two years ago. The company’s Niagara and Bishop brand cigarettes were manufactured in the plant in Angola in Western New York. The plant is currently in the process of moving to the old bingo hall on Territory Road in Oneida.
The move comes as the state is preparing to tax reservation cigarette sales. The law is scheduled to go into effect on Sept. 1.
