Syracuse, NY -- The Oswego Canal may open as soon as Wednesday, while the Erie Canal east of the Oneida County hamlet of New London will remain closed until Thursday at the earliest as crews try to clean debris and reset buoys after Sunday’s heavy rain, Canal Corp. Director Carmella Mantello said.
Water levels in both canals are receding, Mantello said. The Oswego Canal has had a lot of debris and sea grass flushed into it by the rain, she said. On the Erie Canal, there were major debris problems, mostly caused by tree limbs washed into the canal, she said.
Buoys on both canals were washed from their spots and will need to be reset, Mantello said.
The Oswego Canal may open sometime Wednesday, or Thursday at the latest, Mantello said Tuesday evening.
The Erie Canal remains closed between Lock 21 near Herkimer and Lock 2 near the Hudson River until late Thursday or Friday, Mantello said.
When the canals do open, boaters will have to be on guard against hazards, including floating debris and missing buoys, she said.
