Geddes, NY – Construction is to begin next month on the replacement for Crosswalk No. 2, the footbridge over Interstate 690 that was partially knocked down by a passing truck two years ago.

Gene Cilento, speaking for the state Department of Transportation, said the project is part of a contract let in June that also includes replacing the bridge deck connecting State Fair Boulevard westbound with Route 695 south.

Construction of the new footbridge will begin after the 2010 State Fair winds down on Sept. 6. It should take six to seven weeks to complete, Cilento said.

He said he did not know how much it would cost, but said it should be “somewhere along the lines” of a $250,000 estimate given in 2009. The total value of the contract is $1.25 million, he said.

The bridge deck portion of the contract will begin early in the next construction season with completion targeted for the beginning of the 2011 fair, he said.

Crosswalk No. 2 was demolished after an eastbound truck’s hydraulic boom struck it on Aug. 21, 2008, the opening day of that year’s fair. The impact knocked a 3-foot-wide, 200 pound chunk off the structure and onto a sport-utility vehicle carrying a Rochester family to the fair.

Three occupants, Alan and Jennifer Zimmer, and Jennifer’s mother, Mary Ann Delano, suffered a variety of injuries.
