Nedrow, NY - The Onondaga Redhawks men’s lacrosse team return home as champions tonight after winning the Presidents’ Cup in box lacrosse with a dominating victory over the two-time defending champions.
It was the Redhawks first gold medal in the history of the tournament, run by the Canadian Lacrosse Association, said team manager Alfie Jacques.
The Redhawks, an Onondaga Nation team, reached the Presidents’ Cup tournament by winning the CanAm league, consisting of seven U.S. teams and one Canadian team. The Redhawks then traveled to Burnaby, British Columbia, to compete against six Canadian teams that had won their leagues in Senior B box lacrosse.
The Redhawks won their first five games in the tournament, guaranteeing themselves a trip to the gold medal round, Jacques said.
“They couldn’t handle us,” Jacques said. “We took care of everybody.”
To win gold, the Redhawks beat Ontario’s Owen Sound Woodsmen 14-7 on Saturday night.
“We dominated the whole game,” Jacques said. “They tried hard, but we dominated.”
Redhawk Jeremy Thompson, who is also a Syracuse University lacrosse player, was named the tournament most valuable player. Junior Bucktooth joined him on the tournament’s first team. Named to the second team were Redhawk goaltender Ross Bucktooth and Andy Spack.
The Redhawks planned a celebration at 10:30 p.m. today at the Onondaga Nation arena on Route 11.
Five of the players, a trainer and coach Freeman “Boss” Bucktooth were members of the Iroquois Nationals lacrosse team that was denied a visa to play for the world championship this summer in England after a passport dispute.
