Granby, NY - A Van Buren woman was killed Saturday night in a one-car crash after celebrating a friend’s wedding in Oswego, her family said today.
Brianna “Bree” L. Paice, 21, of 121 Henderson Blvd., was with her best friend, Brad T. Castellino, when his car went off state Route 48 in Granby and overturned, state police and a relative said.
Paice’s uncle, Stephen Koegel, of Oswego, said he was told Paice was driving Castellino’s car a short time before the accident. State police said Sunday evening they had not determined who was driving when the crash occurred about 11:05 p.m. on Route 48, between County Line Road and Ostrander Drive.
Castellino, 29, of 9 Steeplechase Lane, Lysander, was treated at Upstate University Hospital in Syracuse for non-life threatening injuries, and released today.
The driver of the 2001 Oldsmobile Aurora went too fast around a curve near the Onondaga-Oswego county line and the car veered off the east side of the road, overturned and came to rest upside down, state police said.
Paice was ejected from the car and pronounced dead at the scene, troopers said.
Alcohol may have contributed to the crash, state police Sgt. Edwin Croucher Jr. said. An autopsy and toxicology tests will be performed, he said.
Paice, a 2007 Oswego High School graduate, had attended a friend’s wedding Saturday in Oswego, her uncle said. Paice knew the bride because they played co-ed softball together, Koegel said. Koegel said he and other family members were told Paice was drinking alcohol at the reception.
After the wedding, Paice stopped at a friend’s house in Fulton where there was a bonfire, her uncle said. She was heading to Baldwinsville to meet some other friends when the crash happened, Koegel said.
In June 2009, Fulton police charged Paice with driving while intoxicated, according to The Post-Standard archives.
Koegel described his niece as a “free spirit” who “lived life her way.” Paice had nearly 1,400 Facebook friends and more than 550 friends on MySpace.
On MySpace, Paice wrote that her life consisted of “family, softball and friends that I love so much!” She listed snowmobiling, jetskiing and four-wheeling as some of her favorite activities.
Paice worked as a waitress at Twin Trees Restaurant in Baldwinsville, Koegel said. Before that, she attended Bryant & Stratton for a year and worked at Canale’s Restaurant in Oswego.
She was the daughter of Mariane Koegel-Paice, of Oswego, and Stewart Paice, of Van Buren. Her family plans to make funeral arrangements today, Koegel said.
“She will be missed by many friends and her family,” he said.
