Cortland, NY – The robber who spurred a manhunt Friday near the SUNY Cortland campus was a man in his late 20s or early 30s with a medium build, wearing dark clothing including a dark, hooded sweatshirt, the Cortland County Sheriff’s Office said.
Police still are investigating whether a weapon was shown during the holdup of the KFC restaurant at 3890 state Route 281, Cortlandville, about 9:17 a.m. Friday, officials said.
Authorities hope to release a composite sketch of the man sometime today, Capt. Mark Helms said.
SUNY Cortland authorities locked down the campus, which is near the KFC, for part of the day while police searched the area with dogs. The suspect, who took an undisclosed sum of cash, was last seen in a wooded area of the water works bordering Cortland and Cortlandville. A search of the woods was fruitless. However, Helms said police recovered a bicycle that the suspect is believed to have used during part of his escape.
Police ask anyone who saw someone answering the suspect's description in the area of the robbery to call the Cortland County Criminal Investigation Division at (607) 753-3311.
