Ohio bear owned by PETA foe kills its caretaker
COLUMBIA STATION, Ohio (AP) — Authorities in northeast Ohio say a bear mauled its 24-year-old caretaker to death during a feeding on a property containing dozens of other exotic pets.
The Lorain County Sheriff's Office says owner Sam Mazzola was helping feed the bear Thursday evening when it fatally attacked 24-year-old Brent Kandra of Elyria.
Mazzola's attorney, John Frenden, says Kandra was an experienced worker who helped Mazzola maintain his animal compound in Columbia Township southwest of Cleveland.
A statement Frenden released Friday from Mazzola and Kandra's friends says the two men worked together for more than six years and says Kandra will be missed by all who knew him.
Authorities will investigate before deciding whether to pursue any charges.
