CNY area has a lower unemployment rate than New York state and the rest of the nation.
SYRACUSE, N.Y. -- The number of unemployed people in the Syracuse metropolitan area decreased by 500 to 26,800 in July — or 8 percent of the work force — a small drop compared with a year ago, according to statistics released today by the state Department of Labor.
The area — which comprises Onondaga, Madison and Oswego counties — had an unemployment rate of 8.1 percent in July 2009. The Syracuse area had 309,700 people employed in July, up 600 from a year ago.
Central New York’s unemployment rate remains better than the New York state rate of 8.4 percent and the national rate of 9.7 percent.
