Auburn, NY -- Two children, ages 8 and 9 years old, were found this afternoon walking on Wright Avenue in the city of Auburn after several hours of searching.

The children, brother and sister, were found after 5 p.m., the Cayuga County 911 Center said. The children were discovered missing from an Auburn residence about 1 p.m. and police were called to the home just before 2 p.m.

After an initial search of the area failed to locate the children, Auburn police expanded the search and sought other resources to help find them.

Residents in the Auburn area were contacted in a reverse 911 call to be alert for the children, which also gave their description.

The state police helicopter, the Highland Search and Rescue Team and members of the Auburn police and fire departments began a coordinated search, police said.

A woman spotted the children walking in the street on Wright Avenue and contacted the 911 center, police said. The woman knew of the missing children because a neighbor told her of the reverse 911 call describing them.

An Auburn police officer was sent to Wright Avenue and he located the children and confirmed they were the ones who were missing, police said.

The 911 center made another round of calls to residents to let them know the children are safe, police said.
