Colgate University is on lockdown as state and Hamilton police officials deal with a car and driver parked at the Oak Drive entrance of the college.
“The situation is basically isolated to lower campus, involving one car,” said Anthony Adornato, speaking for the college about 2:05 p.m. “We’ve blocked the entrances to campus just as a precaution. None of the campus community is really at any risk, but we at this point have just advised personnel and others on campus ... to stay inside their buildings until the situation that state police and Hamilton police are involved in is at an end.”
One man is believed to be in the car, Adornato said. Police still were negotiating with him shortly before 3 p.m., he said.
The initial call came in to Madison County 911 at 12:27 p.m., a 911 dispatcher said.
Adornato said college officials, following Colgate’s emergency plan, alerted the campus community by e-mail about 1:15 p.m., approximately 15 minutes after police told campus security about the safety issue involving the car at the Oak Drive entrance.
At that time four or so law enforcement cars were at the scene while campus security officers moved to block other entrances, he said.
