Town of Sullivan, NY – A Mattydale man was taken to the hospital with a broken arm after the disabled car he was pushing on the shoulder of the state Thruway late Friday was hit by another vehicle, state police said.

Paul R. Bowles, 28, of 329 Brookfield Road, Mattydale, was pushing a disabled 1996 Oldmobile about 11 p.m. on the right shoulder of the highway’s westbound lanes near the Chittenango rest stop when the car was hit from behind, Sgt. Lori Lampson said.

The driver of the second vehicle, Celisa Catoe, 40, of the Bronx, had been driving behind a third vehicle, Lampson said. When that vehicle swerved into the passing lane to avoid Bowles’ car, Catoe’s 2004 Toyota sedan hit the Olds, Lampson said. The Oldsmobile did not have lights on at the time of the crash, she said.

Bowles was pushing the car from the driver's side and was not struck directly, Lampson said. He was taken to Crouse Hospital, where he was treated and released, according to a nursing supervisor.

Catoe was uninjured and was not ticketed, Lampson said. Bowles was ticketed for being a pedestrian on an interstate highway, she said.
