Syracuse, NY – A Syracuse man died after losing consciousness Friday while being booked into the Justice Center Jail, Sheriff Kevin Walsh said.
Raul Pinet, 31, has been charged by Syracuse police with trespassing and resisting arrest and was brought to the booking section shortly after 9 p.m., Walsh said in a prepared statement.
Pinet lost consciousness minutes later and was taken by Rural Metro Ambulance to Upstate University Hospital, where he was pronounced dead, Walsh said.
The Sheriff’s Office and Syracuse Police Department are conducting a joint investigation and an autopsy will be performed, Walsh said.
Pinet was being charged with criminal trespass and resisting arrest in connection with a call about a man attempting to break into a house in the 300 block of Shonnard Street, Syracuse Police Sgt. Gary Bulinski said.
"We’re conducting an investigation into all the circumstances from the time he was encountered to the time he was pronounced (dead)," Bulinski said.
