Jerry Douthett had an infected toe that just kept getting worse and worse. His wife, fearing diabetes, urged him to go to a doctor but he refused. Then one night, while he was passed out in a drunken stupor, his little dog Kiko chewed most of the smelly, infected big toe off.
Doctors who examined Douthett after Kiko's surgery said the toe needed to be amputated, and said Douthett does have diabetes. The nine-toed man now credits Kiko for saving his life. He told The Grand Rapids Press he asked a nurse, "Is there any chance I can get whatever's left of my toe, so I can give it to Kiko as a treat?"
