DeWitt, NY -- DeWitt police are warning residents of a telephone scam that involves calls from the same phone in the 502 area code, which is in Kentucky.
Scammers are using enticing deals to get the person answering the phone to divulge personal information, police said.
One caller asked the resident for personal information to be eligible to receive a free computer from Best Buy. Another call said the resident needed to provide his personal information to be eligible for deals on home improvements.
The number used in these cases is 502-000-9912, which has appeared to have been used in many scams nationwide, police said. In the cases the DeWitt police are looking at, it appears the calls are really coming from Canada.
Police warn that legitimate businesses do not ask to have personal information verified over the phone and detailed personal information should only be given out in person, if possible, and only to a trusted business or individual.
DeWitt police asks residents to call them at 449-3640 if they are contacted by this 502 number or any potential scams.
