Charlie Rangel's 40-year legacy of service to the people of Harlem was shredded Thursday by a scathing ethics rebuke from his House peers.
Rangel, still in disbelief Thursday night, was holding out hope for a plea deal.
"They're still talking," Rangel said of his lawyers and the staff of the ethics committee on a possible deal to head off a messy public trial in September on charges he abused his office and brought disgrace on Congress.
A hopeful Rangel source said: "Just because [the ethics charges] happened doesn't necessarily mean the deal is dead."
