From 2006 to 2008, five pedestrians and five cyclists were injured.

Syracuse, NY – Two Onondaga County intersections were among the most dangerous crossroads among five upstate New York counties for walkers and biker riders over a three-year period, an AARP study contends.

The study, released Thursday, identified the intersection of South Geddes and Seymour streets, Syracuse, as the most hazardous of all. Five pedestrians and five cyclists were hit and injured by cars there during the study period, 2006 through 2008.

The downtown intersection of South Salina and East Fayette streets also made AARP’s most dangerous intersection list with six pedestrians and one cyclist hit and hurt over the three years. It took seven or more such incidents to make the roster.

Two Monroe County crossroads, three Erie County intersections and four Albany County intersections completed the list. All 11 hazardous crossings were in those counties’ big cities, Rochester, Buffalo and Albany. Broome County also was studied but none of its intersections made the list.

AARP officials revealed the statistics as a news conference at South Geddes and Seymour where the group pushed for a proposed “complete streets” state law. Organizers said the bill would require road design that balances the needs of walkers, riders, people with disabilities, drivers and public transit riders of all ages.

Officials from Arise, the American Cancer Society and the city of Syracuse joined AARP at the news conference.
