Event planned Sunday in Moravia and Summerhill area.
Moravia, NY -- The Moravia and Summerhill areas will celebrate the birthday of former U.S. President Millard Fillmore with an event on Sunday.
A dish-to-pass lunch will be held from 1 to 3 p.m. at the Summerville Town Hall. It will include music, a chance to meet new Cayuga County Historian Linda Frank and a birthday cake and singing of "Happy Birthday" for Fillmore
Fillmore, the nation's 13th president, was born Jan. 7, 1800 between Moravia and Summerhill. To reach the birth site, take Main Street (Route 38) south through the village to Skinner Hill Road. Turn east and follow until it becomes Fillmore Road. Follow to the site.
On Friday, Col. John Higgins of the New York Air National Guard’s 107th Airlift Wing placed a wreath on behalf of President Barack Obama at Forest Lawn Cemetery in Buffalo Friday where Fillmore is buried. The U.S. military honors former presidents by laying wreaths sent by the current president.
The University at Buffalo has organized the annual birthday commemoration for the 13th president for the last 47 years. Fillmore was the university’s first chancellor and was also instrumental in starting Buffalo General Hospital and the city’s libraries and museums.
Fillmore died in 1874. The Moravia area celebrates Fillmore Fun Day during the summer.
