Syracuse, NY -- More than 450 people have been ticketed so far in the latest crackdown on drivers using cell phones or texting devices in Syracuse.
Since the start on Thursday, city police ticketed 340 people for using cell phones and troopers ticketed another 57. Another 30 people were ticketed by city police for texting and troopers ticketed another 27.
The sheriff’s office, who are also part of the effort, did not have ticket numbers available Saturday night.
This is a second wave of a federally funded initiative against distracted driving that brings deputies and troopers into Syracuse to complement the city police force. The first wave in April saw 2,185 people were ticketed for using a cell phone and 115 were ticketed for texting.
The distracted driver enforcement program ends July 31.
