Facebook has officially become the world’s fastest growing company with the addition of its 500 millionth active user yesterday. The company launched Feb. 4, 2004.

To put it into perspective, if Facebook were to be a "country," its population would surpass that of the United States and Indonesia, making it the third largest country in the world.

In a blog post, Facebook’s CEO Mark Zuckerberg, 26, wrote, “I could have never imagined all of the ways people would use Facebook when we were getting started 6 years ago. I want to thank you for being part of making Facebook what it is today.”

What did Zuckerberg and crew do to celebrate? Well, they had every single employee of Facebook take a picture of themselves "thanking" the users that have gotten them this far. You can check out that album by clicking here.

Zuckerberg began Facebook as a student at Harvard University. He wanted to put the social experience of college on Facebook by creating a living yearbook. Facebook eventually opened up to other Boston area colleges within a few months of its launch. Later on, it allowed all college students to sign up with a valid college e-mail. Within 2 years, Facebook allowed anyone to join with a valid e-mail account.

Since jumping the hurdle of 500 million members, Zuckerberg has launched Facebook Stories, which allows users to share how they have used the social network around the world.

“These services [on Facebook] are really universal, everyone has family and friends across the world that they want to stay connected with,” Zuckerberg told Diane Sawyer in an ABC World News interview that aired yesterday.

The social network will also be making an appearance on the big screen in October, showcasing the creation of the medium along with the controversies that have splattered onto headlines about it over the past years. Zuckerberg and other employees have said that the movie is “much more exciting” than the actual launch of the company, and claim that much of it is fiction.
