Cortland, NY – The afternoon’s severe weather continues with a severe thunderstorm bearing down on southern Cayuga, southwestern Cortland, southeastern Seneca and northern Tompkins counties.
The National Weather Service in Binghamton issued the warning at 2:40 p.m., minutes after its Doppler radar detected a storm nearing Ovid capable of producing quarter-size hail. The storm is moving east at 50 mph and is expected to reach Locke by 3 p.m., Groton by 3:06 p.m., Freeville by 3:10 p.m, Dryden by 3:12 p.m. and Cortland by 3:16 p.m.
The storm warning extends until 3:30 p.m.
People in the path of the storm should get inside and stay away from windows, and those in or near a lake should get away from the water into a car or indoors.
