Granby, NY -- An Oswego firefighter was not working today after his arrest Tuesday afternoon on accusations that he struck a man with a cane in front of children, authorities said.

Jason T. Barnhart, 33, of 395 county Route 10, Pennellville, is charged with misdemeanor assault, criminal trespass and endangering the welfare of a child.

Deputies said Barnhart came to a town of Granby residence to see his five children, the oldest being 10 years old.

Barnhart got into an argument there with a man over visitation of the children, said Undersheriff Robert J. Lighthall. The undersheriff did not know the victim's relation to Barnhart.

Barnhart is accused of striking the victim with the cane. When asked to leave, he also allegedly punched the victim, causing bruising and swelling to his face.

Barnhart has been employed as an Oswego city firefighter and critical care technician for about five years, said Chief Jeffrey McCrobie.

The chief declined to comment on Barnhart's status with the department, only saying that Barnhart wasn't working today.
