Hastings, NY -- Amanda Haskins, 19, and her 17-year-old sister had just gone to bed around 2 a.m. today when they heard popping and crackling noises in their Oswego County home.

Then the power went out.

At first they thought there was a storm outside. But then they got up to see what was going on.

That's when they realized their single-story manufactured mobile home was on fire, Hastings Volunteer Fire Chief Neal Turo said.

Both Haskins sisters and their family pets got out of the home safely. Their mother, Tina Haskins, was not home when the fire started, but she returned after someone called her to tell her about the fire. The girls' grandmother, Pat Reed, who lives next door, came to make sure her granddaughters were OK.

Amanda Haskins called 911 at 2:18 a.m. to report the fire, which she said was coming from the back of the home at 1136 county Route 84, Hastings.

About 50 volunteer firefighters from 10 departments responded. They were: Hastings, Brewerton, Caughdenoy, Central Square, Cleveland, Mexico, Palermo, Parish, Sandy Creek and West Monroe volunteer fire departments. The Oswego County Sheriff's Office and SOVAC Ambulance also responded.

Turo said the fire started outside and worked its way into the roof overhang, before spreading inside the mobile home. Firefighters are still trying to determine the cause of the fire.

"It's still under investigation," Turo said, adding that the fire is not suspicious.

Smoke detectors inside the mobile home worked properly, Turo said.

The majority of the roof and ceiling were destroyed. The rest of the home has water damage, Turo said.

The Haskins are staying with their grandmother next door, and the American Red Cross Disaster Action Team is helping the family, Turo said.

According to the Red Cross, the Haskins family "lost everything."

The Red Cross also is helping another Oswego County family whose mobile home was badly damaged from a fire Saturday evening.

A family of four lived in the mobile home at 19 Waterview Road, Lot 11, in the town of Oswego. Red Cross officials say the home had "major damage."
