Steve Jobs says reception problem is present in less than 1 percent of iPhone 4s.

“You know, we’re not perfect,” CEO Steve Jobs said on stage at the Apple press conference today, addressing the reception problem some iPhone 4 users have brought up.

Apple knew shortly after the first iPhone 4 devices were shipped that the antenna problems could be in issue for about .55 percent of the total products sold. While most users have not noticed the issue, Jobs has offered to give all who have bought an iPhone 4 or plan on buying an iPhone 4 a cover that will alleviate all reception problems.

The lack of cell reception stems from skin to antenna contact. The antenna runs around the border of the phone, leaving little to no room for users to hold the phone without making contact. With a case, the skin to antenna contact is eliminated, making the reception problem obsolete.

“It doesn’t seem like a good thing if you can touch your phone in a certain way and it loses signal,” Jobs said.

Jobs also demonstrated how other phones, such as the BlackBerry 9700 and HTC Droid Eris, have the same reception problems when they are held tightly.

After showing the crowd the problem runs in many smartphone devices he said, “We haven’t figured out a way around the laws of physics. Yet.”

There have been over 3 million iPhone 4s sold in the past few weeks. 1.7 million of the devices were sold during the first 3 days of availability.
