Syracuse, NY – A block of roadway in the heart of downtown Syracuse will remain closed until late Monday or early Tuesday so Water Department crews can fix a leaky 4-inch service pipe and get the pavement back in shape, Water Commissioner Deborah Somers said.

Workers closed and began digging up the 100 block of West Fayette Street this morning after the leak caused the pavement above to buckle, Somers said. They had to dig all the way across the street because trolley tracks still lay under West Fayette. Buses and cars are being diverted onto South Salina and South Clinton streets at either end of the closed block.

Somers said it will take three days for the new concrete base that workers must pour to cure. The department chose to begin the job today to have the cure time fall on the weekend, when West Fayette is less traveled, she said.
