New Hartford, NY--John W. Sammon, the founder of PAR Technology Corp., a defense contractor that grew into a major player in providing cash register systems to restaurants and hotels, said Thursday he will retire by the end of the year.
Sammon founded Pattern Analysis & Recognition, the predecessor of PAR Tech, 42 years ago to do research for the federal government. The company takes that research and attempts to find a commercial application for it.
Although he will step down as CEO of the company that employs 1,700, Sammon said he will stay on as the company's chairman.
The board has begun looking for someone, either from inside or outside the company, to take his place, Sammon said in a press release.
PAR Tech is one of the last publicly held companies in Central New York. It reported $223 million in revenues for 2009.
The company provides computer-based system design and engineering services to the Department of Defense and other federal agencies.
In 1980, it created computerized point-of-sale cash registers, and is known for its software and hardware expertise for restaurants, hotels and resorts.
More recently PAR Tech has moved into providing computerized management systems that help companies keep track of cargo and the ships and trucks that move it.
