Salina, NY -- Firefighters struggled in Wednesday’s blazing heat to douse a fire on the roof of Wegmans supermarket on Taft Road in the Salina.

No one was hurt, but the 24-hour store has been shut down due to smoke and water damage, said a company spokesperson.

Evelyn Carter said workers would try to clean and ready the store overnight. If a state health inspector could be brought in first thing Thursday, she said the plan was to reopen the store later in the morning.

Firefighters from Moyers Corners, North Syracuse, Mattydale and Liverpool responded to the fire. Moyers Corners Fire Chief Edward Wisnowski Jr. said the fire was in a trailer containing construction material that was on the roof, near the rear corner of the store.

Firefighters in full gear could be seen using shovels and pikes to clear away damaged parts of the roof. Firefighters worked in shifts as temperatures reached 93 degrees, with some soaking themselves beneath the nozzle of a fire hose.

Two ambulances arrived at the scene and treated two firefighters who suffered from the heat, but no one was taken to the hospital, Wisnowski said.
