DeWitt, NY – Peggy, the pit bull mix recovering from injuries received during a four-story fall from a Syracuse apartment building, is being given up for adoption by her owner, officials said.
But potential new owners who haven’t already applied to adopt her probably are out of luck.
DeWitt Animal Hospital, which has been caring for the year-old dog since its June 25 plunge, already has received about 100 applications to adopt her and won’t take more, said Dr. Robert Wilcox, the hospital’s owner and primary veterinarian.
Laura Fiorenza, the assistant district attorney who handles animal abuse cases for Onondaga County, said she was told this morning by a Syracuse police officer handling Peggy’s case that her owner was giving her up.
Police have charged the owner’s boyfriend, Ricky Coleman, 20, with aggravated animal cruelty, a felony, and criminal trespass. They contend Coleman dropped Peggy from a window at 1809 E. Fayette St. during an argument with the owner.
Peggy suffered numerous injuries, including a broken rear right leg that required the insertion of up to nine pins by a surgeon to repair. The animal hospital took in more than $5,000 in contributions that will pay for the surgery plus post-operative visits and physical therapy, Wilcox said.
The dog is doing well, but hospital officials want to give her more time to recover before letting her move into a new home where she will have to meet new people and, perhaps, new fellow pets, Wilcox said. He said an announcement about her future may come next week.
