Fulton, NY -- The auction of assets of the New York Chocolate and Confections Co. here has been postponed for a few hours because of a break-in at the plant sometime Monday night or early Tuesday.
Fulton Police Deputy Chief Thomas Abelgore said the plant was forcibly entered and some equipment was stolen and some was damaged.
The auction of the company's assets originally was scheduled for 10 a.m. today. But it was moved to 1 p.m. because of the break-in, bankruptcy court officials said.
The New York Chocolate and Confections Co., owned by Comite de Gestion de la Filere Cafe Cocoa, filed for bankruptcy protection in April and now is selling all its assets, including equipment, building and land. L. Michael Treadwell, executive director of Operation Oswego County, said at least 14 investors have shown interest in buying all or some of the assets.
His hope is someone will buy all the assets to begin chocolate manufacturing again in the plant. Operation Oswego County is the company's largest creditor and is owed about $450,000.
Comite de Gestion de la Filiere Cafe Cocoa has set up an account to pay its bills. Comite de Gestion consists of four people from Ivory Coast.
