Syracuse, NY - Syracuse police this morning are investigating a fatal shooting that occurred overnight on the city's East Side.

Sgt. Tom Connellan said a man was shot about 4:45 a.m. in front of 2425 E. Genesee St.. He was transported to University Hospital where he was pronounced dead.

Capt. Richard Walsh said at the scene that the victim appeared to be in his 20s. He also said a number of people were being interviewed at police headquarters about the fatal shooting.

Several evidence technicians remained on the scene this morning, raking through the lawn of the house on the northeast corner of Ellis and East Genesee streets looking for ballistics evidence in the grass. Several investigators also were at the scene.

One neighbor, who asked not to be identified, said he awoke to the sound of gunshots about 4:45 a.m. today and looked out to see a victim lying in front of the house at the corner. That neighbor said he thought he heard as many as 10 shots.

Another neighbor, Nancy Miller, said she and her husband also were awakened by the sound of gunshots shortly after 4:30 a.m.

"We knew it was shooting," Miller said. She also noted they could hear a man's voice, a woman shouting and a dog barking in the immediate area as her husband called 911 to report the gunfire.

Miller said she remembered hearing more than four shots. Her husband thought he heard eight or more shots, she added.

She also said the shots came in two bursts, separated by a short break.

"The police were here very, very fast," Miller said.

But the incident was disturbing, she said.

"We stayed awake the rest of the night," she noted.

Other neighbors on the other side of East Genesee Street said they had heard nothing. One said she was only awakened by police knocking at her door looking for any information about what took place.

Connellan and Walsh both said additional information is expected to be released later today.

Anyone with information about the fatal shooting is asked to call the Criminal Investigations Division at 442-5222. All calls will be kept confidential.
