Albany, NY — New York state has begun closing 55 parks and historic sites as the budget crisis continues.
Officials at the Office of Parks, Recreation and Historic Preservation say the agency began shutting down 41 parks and 14 historic sites across New York today.
Parks officials say sites with parking lot gates and restrooms are having them locked, and anyone venturing onto the properties will be asked to leave.
The closed sites include Fort Ontario State Historic Site, in the city of Oswego; Chittenango Falls State Park, in Madison County; Pixley Falls park, in Oneida County; and the swimming beach at Selkirk Shores park, in Oswego County.
The Legislature has voted to restore $11.3 million in parks funding cut from Gov. David Paterson’s budget proposal. But lawmakers and Paterson have yet to agree on a budget, which is now 47 days late.
