Bridgeport, NY -- Police and rescue workers are at the scene of a crash in Bridgeport involving a motorcycle rider who, police said, carried a wheelchair on his three-wheeled bike because he had lost the use of his legs in a previous motorcycle crash.

Onondaga County Undersheriff Warren Darby said three motorcyclists were heading north on Route 298 when the lead rider - on the three-wheeled bike- attempted to pass a car.

The rider, Darby said, clipped the car as he attempted to pass and was knocked into the southbound lane, where he collided with an oncoming car. The collision caused the three-wheeled motorcycle to flip at least once.

Darby said the rider, a 40-year-old male he did not identify, suffered a head injury and was taken to Upstate University Hospital. Darby said his injuries were not considered life threatening.

Airbags went off in the southbound car when it was hit by the motorcycle, Darby said, but the driver was apparently not injured.

Darby said the other motorcyclists told police about the wheelchair attached to the three-wheeler, and said the rider had his previous accident on the same bike before it was converted to a three-wheeler.
