North Syracuse, NY -- Spilled pool chemicals shut down parts of a North Syracuse neighborhood Tuesday afternoon.

North Syracuse firefighters were called to Ivon Drive at 5:45 for what was reported as a garage fire. What they found was a homeowner who had been cleaning her garage and spilled a years-old container of pool chemical, splashing her adult daughter and creating a cloud of hydrochloric acid vapo, said North Syracuse Fire Chief Patrick Brennan.

The Onondaga County hazardous material team was activated, bringing firefighters from several area departments. Two ambulances were also on the scene. Nearby intersections were blocked and fire trucks stood by at the nearby North Syracuse Junior High School.

After checking with Cannon Pools, which had sold the chemical, and a guide to dealing with chemicals, North Syracuse firefighters calculated that the spill could be cleaned up and washed away with water.

“We flushed it with water,” said Brennan as firefighters rolled up hoses and streets were reopened to traffic.
