Syracuse, NY -- Two vacuum cleaner salesmen from Syracuse are facing a misdemeanor charge after a vacuum demonstration went bad in Richfield Springs, state police said.

Taylor J. Newton, 25, and Phillip J. Smith, 29, were charged Monday with reckless endangerment of property after a mattress was damaged at a Richfield Springs home, Trooper Andy Davis said.

Newton and Smith were selling Kirby Co. vacuums, Davis said, and during the demonstration they damaged a $1,300 Sealy latex foam mattress, Davis said.

Both were at the home when troopers arrived, Davis said.

“They were trying to make it right,” Davis said.

The owner of the mattress is seeking reimbursement, Davis said. He declined to say specifically what was done to the mattress.

Efforts to reach Newton and Smith were unsuccessful.
