Do you agree with the expected $1 per cigarette pack tax increase?

Monday, Gov. David Paterson proposed $775 million in health care cuts and savings, which legislators agreed to. The alternative was shutting down state government. Next week, lawmakers and lobbyists expect Paterson to include a $1 per pack increase in the state’s cigarette tax in his 11th budget extender bill. Cuts to education could follow. This had syracuse.com users talking. Some users believed any high tax is a regressive tax, others said that taxing unhealthy products was a great idea.

Here’s what syracuse.com user slim1h2o had to say:

“....and what is your vice? Maybe we should tax that out of existence too...

Too much tax on anything is regressive and will just hurt everybody. I know I can't convince people of that fact, but it doesn't matter whether people believe it or not, it doesn't make it any less so or not so.....

Put too much tax on anything, and people will stop buying those products, then people will get laid-off that make those products, which will cause less income taxes to be collected, more people on welfare, more people with less money to spend, and on and on and on we go, to the bottom!!”
