Fort Drum, NY -- A First Lieutenant from Fort Drum died in Afghanistan Friday, the Army said.
Joseph J. Theinert, 24, of Sag Harbor, died in Kandahar of wounds he suffered when his unit was attacked by insurgents armed with rocket-propelled grenades and an improvised explosive device, the Army said in a release.
Theinert was a member of the New York State Army National Guard assigned to the 1st Squadron, 71st Cavalry Regiment, 1st Brigade Combat Team of the 10th Mountain Division. Before being attached to the 10th Mountain Division, he was assigned to the 27th Infantry Brigade Combat Team in Syracuse.
Theinert graduated from the State University of New York at Albany in 2008. At the same time he completed ROTC training at Siena College. He reported to Fort Drum in July and deployed to Afghanistan this spring.
He is survived by his parents and a brother.
Theinert's body was returned to the United States on Saturday.
Theinert is the ninth member of the state National Guard killed in Afghanistan since Sept. 11, 2001.
