Cortland, NY -- Animal cruelty investigators removed 27 animals from a Town of Scott residence Friday after a month-long investigation into complaints about their treatment.
The Cortland Community SPCA executed a search warrant at the Whispering Pine Kennels, 6594 W. Scott Road. Investigators removed 25 boxers, cockapoos, poodles and cocker spaniels, as well as a cat and a bird, said Chief Investigator William A. Carr.
No one has been charged, but Carr said he expects to bring charges of animal cruelty next week.
Kennel owner Melissa Allen said she ran a safe and clean facility that is licensed by the town. The cat, a bird and at least two of the dogs taken Friday were personal pets, she said.
Complaints by several of the kennels' customers prompted the investigation, Carr said.
The animals were kept in airline crates that were not large enough for most of them to move out of their own feces and urine, the SPCA said.
She was in the midst of cleaning the dogs cages when investigators showed up with a search warrant, Allen said.
The Cortland SPCA is a "no kill" shelter and all of the animals will be put up for adoption, said Executive Director Donna Davie.
