Three CNY school teams place high in state Envirothon

Keuka College, NY -- It was oh so close for three of the five local high school teams competing Wednesday and Thursday at the state Envirothon Competition at Keuka College.

The teams from Onondaga County, Oswego County and Madison County placed second, third and fourth out of 50 teams statewide in the competition. The winner was Candor High School from Tioga County with a total score of 444.67.

This was Tioga County's sixth straight win statewide.

The Onondaga County team from Skaneateles High scored 421. The Oswego County team from G. Ray Bodley High in Fulton came in with 402.67 points and the Madison County team from Chittenango High scored 401.67.

Oneida County's team from Clinton High School came in 18th with a ascore of 347. Cortland County's team from Onondaga-Cortland-Madison BOCES New Visions program placed 22nd with a score of 341 and the team from Cayuga County and Weedsport High School came in 33rd with a score of 315.67.

During the Envirothon, students answer questions dealing with soils, aquatics, forestry, wildlife and current events. They also must give an oral presentation about an environmental topic.

The Oswego team from Bodley High had the highest score of all 50 teams in the oral presentation and was tied for second in soils. The Onondaga team from Skaneateles High was tied for the highest score in forestry.
