Oswego, NY -- A tavern and a Verizon Wireless store in Oswego were damaged this morning after a pick-up truck struck a parked car, then sped through an intersection and into a building on one of the city's main streets.

“We are very fortunate that there were no pedestrians on the sidewalk or crosswalk at the time of the accident, and that there were no serious injuries,” said Police Chief Michael J. Dehm Jr.

The building on the northwest corner of West Second and West Bridge streets sustained some outside cracks and some structural damage inside, said Capt. Tory DeCaire.

The crash occurred about 10:30 a.m. As of 1 p.m. the truck was still at the scene. It stayed in the building until it was determined it was safe to remove, Lt. Charlie Searor said. After it was removed, the damaged area was fenced off until it can be repaired, he said.

The sole clerk in the Verizon store at 33 W. Bridge St. was not injured. The Club House Tavern at 126 W. Second St. was closed and not occupied.

Here’s how police say the accident unfolded.

An Oswego police officer was sitting in traffic when he saw a pick-up truck driven by Keith E. Rappleye, 35, of Hannibal, travel west on West Bridge Street. The driver suffered from an undetermined medical condition between West First Street and West Second Street.

The truck accelerated. It struck a parked and unoccupied vehicle, shoving it through several street signs before coming to rest in the intersection of West Bridge Street and West Second Street.

The truck continued on the north curb and sidewalk of West Bridge Street. It then crossed West Second Street, striking and coming to rest against the east wall of the building on the northwest corner of West Second Street and West Bridge Street.

Rappleye was conscious when emergency services arrived. Oswego Ambulance took Rappleye to Oswego Hospital for evaluation.

No tickets have been issued and the crash remains under investigation.
