TOLEDO, Ohio — Federal authorities have accused an Ohio couple of conspiring to provide thousands of dollars to a Mideast terrorist group.
Authorities say Toledo residents Hor and Amera Akl (ah-MEER’-ah AH’-kuhl) were arrested Thursday after an FBI informant gave them $200,000 cash, which they were preparing to hide in a vehicle being shipped to Lebanon.
Prosecutors say the couple planned to conceal up to $500,000 to be given to Hezbollah and expected a commission. The couple face charges of conspiring to provide material support to a foreign terrorist organization.
They will remain in custody until a detention hearing Tuesday. Messages left at their home and their public defender’s office haven’t been returned.
The U.S. blames Hezbollah for attacks on Israel. Hezbollah has tried to reinvent itself as a more conventional political movement.
