Victoria C. Deverso, 17, of Clay, was a passenger in her own SUV when her friend — who was driving fast and passing cars — swerved to get back into her lane on Route 31 in Sullivan. Chelsea L. Kuss, 17, of Salina, lost control of the SUV and crashed head-on into 37-year-old Peggy Blume’s minivan, state police said.

Kuss remains in critical condition and Blume, of Bridgeport, was in serious condition today at Upstate University Hospital in Syracuse, a nursing supervisor said.

State police said today they were not releasing any more details.

“We’re still doing interviews,” Keller said. “I know it seems like it’s taking a long time, but we’re still doing follow-up interviews. We’re in no rush.”

Keller said he has not seen any reports yet that would show if Kuss or Deverso had been drinking alcohol.

Both girls were supposed to be in school, but instead went to Sylvan Beach, police and school officials have said. Kuss, a senior, attends a high school program at OCM BOCES through Solvay High School.

“The reality is it’s an open investigation,” Keller said. “I have to make sure the integrity of the case isn’t ruined.”
