Auburn,NY--A two –year-old Auburn boy drowned this morning in his family’s inground swimming pool, Auburn police said.
Police and the Onondaga County Medical Examiner are investigating the drowning, but they believe it was accidental, said Lt. Shawn I. Butler.
“It appears these parents had more than adequate precautions inside and outside the house,” he said. “Unfortunately it looks like a very determined little boy was able to defeat all of the gates.”
Police are not releasing the boy’s name, or those of his parents, or their address.
One of the parents found the child in the pool, Butler said. Police were called to the home on Mary Street near the Clifford Field area at 7:14 a.m. on a report of an unresponsive child.
Officer Timothy Spingler was first on scene and immediately began performing cardio pulmonary resuscitation on the boy, who had no pulse. He continued until the Auburn Fire Department and TLC ambulance personnel arrived and took over care of the child.
The child was taken to Auburn Memorial Hospital where he died.
Butler said police believe the toddler got out of his room while his parents were getting ready for work. The family also includes an slightly older daughter, he said.
“The parents are absolutely devastated,” he said. “There’s no indication this is anything other than a tragic accident.”
