Syracuse, NY--The Syracuse Department of Aviation and students from an art class at Henninger High School this morning unveiled a mural at Hancock International Airport that blends artistic styles to create the city’s skyline.
As he viewed the completed project, Josh Seamans, 16, a 10th grader in Lori Lizzio’s art class, said he was surprised at how well his interpretation of a deep blue sky and bright red smoke stack worked with the other 27 mural panels.
His mural section was an experiment said Seamans, who usually works in pencil. This was his first time working with paint, he said.
“I like it, it’s awesome,” he said of the mural.
After seeing student art in other airports, Syracuse Aviation Commissioner Rory McMahon said he asked the Henninger art class to produce a mural for the airport lobby.
The mural hangs in a small recently installed seating area located between the JetBlue ticket counter and the Syracuse Police Department substation where it’s likely the 2 million passengers a year that pass through the airport will see it.
Passengers paused to watch as McMahon and the students pulled down a black drape that covered the mural to light applause. Students beamed as they stood in front of mural as news media and teachers took pictures.
McMahon said he plans to ask student artists from other schools to donate their work to the airport.
The mural was made by taking a picture of the skyline and dividing it in 28 sections that were given to each student in the class. Students could interpret the section in their own style, Lizzio said.
Their blending of styles represents the diversity of the school and the city, she said.
