Norfolk, Va. -- A former Onondaga County resident recently assumed command of the nation’s largest and oldest active warship.
Capt. O.P. Honors Jr. took command of the aircraft carrier USS Enterprise during a ceremony May 6 in Norfolk, Va.
Honors, who was executive officer on the Enterprise before taking command, is a 1979 graduate of Cicero High School and a 1983 graduate of the U.S. Naval Academy. He also earned a master’s degree at the Naval War College.
Honors was a naval aviator and flew 85 combat missions during his career. His awards include the Legion of Merit and the Bronze Star.
Honors is the son of Owen P. Honors of Clay.
Honors is the 21st commanding officer in the 48-year history of the nuclear-powered aircraft carrier.
