The supreme court justice will speak at St. Lawrence University's commencement Sunday.
Supreme Court Justice Sonia Sotomayor and her brother, Dr. Juan Sotomayor, toured University Hospital on Friday.
Syracuse, NY – U.S. Supreme Court Justice Sonia Sotomayor and her brother, Syracuse doctor Juan Sotomayor, toured Upstate University Hospital on Friday, a visit the doctor called a private tour to see the workplace of a family friend.
The supreme court justice was in town on her way to St. Lawrence University where on Sunday she will be a commencement speaker and receive an honorary degree.
Dr. Sotomayor said he and his sister weren’t looking for any publicity. “It was just a friend giving us a tour,” he said.
Justice Sotomayor is the first Hispanic woman sit on the United States Supreme Court. She was nominated by President Barack Obama to replace retiring Justice David Souter in 2009.
The Sotomayors grew up in the Bronx. She is a graduate of Princeton University and earned her law degree at Yale.
In 1991 she was appointed to the U.S. District Court by President George H.W. Bush. She was nominated to the U.S. Court of Appeals by President William Clinton in 1997. She joined the Supreme Court last August.
