Syracuse, NY -- A classic muscle car from the Sixties took off on its driver today and crashed through the front of a garage at a Carbon Street residence, according to Syracuse police.
Police and fire were called to 219 Carbon St. just after 1 p.m. by a report of a vehicle into a building. When police arrived, they found a 1968 Chevrolet Nova SS with heavy front-end damage with its nose against the back wall of a three-car garage.
Michael Santoro, 19, was going to move the car but when he put the vehicle in drive, it took off on him, Sgt. Gary Bulinski said. Even though he had his foot on the brake, the car lunged forward and he couldn’t stop it, Bulinski said.
Police officers on the scene said the car was a street-legal racing car with a 540 cubic-inch engine.
Santoro suffered minor injuries. The car also hit a motorcycle inside the garage after it crashed through the door, Bulinski said.
Santoro is the son of the car’s owner, Joseph Santoro, Bulinski said.
