Battle for congressional seat could take an additional two weeks or more.
Syracuse, NY -- Republican Ann Marie Buerkle added 25 votes to her lead today over U.S. Rep. Dan Maffei in the 25th Congressional District race after Cayuga County corrected some election night errors.
Both Buerkle and Maffei actually lost votes that were erroneously included as part of the 25th District in northern Cayuga County, according to the Cayuga County Board of Elections.
The net change gave Buerkle the extra 25 votes in the county, where she now leads 1,748 to 959.
The correction means that Buerkle's overall lead in the four-county district stands at 684 votes. A routine audit and recanvassing will begin next week in all four counties before absentee and provisional ballots are opened.
Election officials say it could be two weeks or more before a winner is determined.
