Syracuse, NY -- City officials put the Clinton Square fountain on the night shift Thursday, shutting it down during the heat of the day in an effort to discourage people from bathing in the downtown reflecting pool.

City Parks and Recreation Director Patrick Driscoll said the plan was not to have the fountain shut off during the day all summer, but to try the tactic for now.

At 9 p.m., the underwater lights that illuminate the fountain turned on. Moments later, water began to rise from the fountain following the choreographed patterns that have become familiar to Clinton Square regulars.

With the heat of the day gone, and three short-sleeved police officers standing by, no one of the dozen or so people at Clinton Squared attempted to bath in the reflecting pool.
