A 24-year-old Syracuse police officer has been taken to the hospital following an accident involving at least one other motor vehicle on the 2400 block of East Fayette Street on the East Side of Syracuse.
The accident occurred just before 6 p.m. and there was a large response of other police patrol cars to the scene. A police spokesman said the officer was in "serious condition with leg injuries, but they were not life-threatening."
The officer crashed into a tree, causing severe front end damage to his patrol car. The vehicle's airbag went off during the crash. In addition, the right front wheel came off and rolled downhill at least a block away.
Another vehicle, a gold sedan, came to rest at the intersection of East Fayette Street and Genesee Park Drive, also with front end damage. The two cars were about 25 feet apart.
Sgt. Tom Connellan said the injured officer, whose name is being withheld pending notification of his family, was a March graduate of the police academy. He was on his way to a "burglary in progress" call when the accident occurred.
Connellan said another officer had confronted a burglary suspect and was involved in a foot chase with the suspect at the time.
