Upstate NY soldier killed in Iraq in non-combat incident

St. Johnsville, NY - A soldier from St. Johnsville, located about 86 miles east of Syracuse in Montgomery County, died Sunday in Iraq from injuries sustained in a non-combat incident, the Department of Defense announced today. PFC. David R. Jones Jr., 21, who died in Baghdad, Iraq, was assigned to the 2nd Squadron, 3rd Armored Cavalry Regiment, Fort Hood, Texas....

St. Johnsville, NY - A soldier from St. Johnsville, located about 86 miles east of Syracuse in Montgomery County, died Sunday in Iraq from injuries sustained in a non-combat incident, the Department of Defense announced today.

PFC. David R. Jones Jr., 21, who died in Baghdad, Iraq, was assigned to the 2nd Squadron, 3rd Armored Cavalry Regiment, Fort Hood, Texas.

The Utica Observer-Dispatch reported that Jones was reportedly found Sunday in his barracks with a gunshot wound to the head, but the circumstances about how he died, were unclear.

Gov. David Paterson has directed that flags on New York state government buildings be flown at half-staff Friday, Oct. 29, in honor of Jones.
