Auburn, NY — The state health department has determined samples of algae taken from Owasco Lake show it to be a type that can be toxic for humans and pets.
The blue-green algae was first brought to the attention of the Cayuga County Health Department last month by lake area residents.
While Auburn and Owasco residents who drink treated water drawn from the lake are in no danger, people should avoid direct contact with lake water containing the algae, health officials say.
Consuming water containing high levels of blue-green algae has been associated with effects on the liver and nervous system in laboratory animals, pets, livestock and people, the county health department says. Direct contact or breathing airborne droplets containing high levels of blue-green algae toxins during swimming or showering can cause irritation of the skin, eyes, nose and throat and inflammation in the respiratory tract.
It is the first time this type of algae has been found in the lake.
